A new research report from Ericsson and Imperial College London provides a broad horizon scan of the impacts of ICT on services for money, banking, insurance and risk.

Based on in-depth research in collaboration with Imperial College London, the report identifies some of the major forces challenging the boundaries of current financial services industry structures and the role that digital technologies and regulatory responses may play in crossing these thresholds.

The most significant forces for industrial disruption within the financial services industries are more than likely the emerging cryptocurrencies, which allow the creation of trust without government participation. As a result, these solutions can create not just a new financial system but can also trigger entirely new forms of corporate enterprises

Bitcoin, for example, “shifts the model from ‘trust by exclusion’ to ‘trust by computation’ – this levels the playing field for anyone who wishes to operate a bank, stock exchange or escrow service.”22 Anyone with sufficient computational capacity – even a mobile device is enough – can now provide the same services as large scale banks such as Lloyds, HSBC or Bank of America.
